AUSTRALIA’S WILDS

ENGLAND LESS CIVILISED. LITIGANT’S DELUSIONS. LONDON, January 23. “ Two years of Hell in England, and many years in the wilds of Australia among cannibals and rabbits,’’ is the way Ur Marjorie Harcourt, a notorious litigant, described her chequered career, when pleading for the High Court’s sympathy against the judgment of an inferior court. Dr Harcourt’s grievances arc a perennial topic in the courts, high and low. She began by accusing policemen of persecuting her, and now charges the judges with conducing an inquisition upon her. -She always conducts her own case. Sometimes she g makes long speeches, and is heard with indulgence; at other times she is unceremoniously ordered to leave the court. Dr Harcourt declared through sobs today that she craved for the intellectual life, but that civilisation in England was behind civilisation in the Australian wilds. The judges dismissed the appeal with all courtesy and solemnity, and Dr Harcourt departed quietly.
