ENGLISHWOMAN SUFFERS. LONDON, January 17. A revue author, Mr Fred Thompson, said: “It is the most scandalous thing I ever heard,” when told that his wife had been detained at Ellis Island, New York, because the immigration officials demanded a mental examination. The American doctors had said she was suffering only from seasickness and exhaustion. Mr Thompson added: “My wife is as sane as any woman, ’ He was privately informed that the action of immigration officials had caused something of a scandal in New York. His wife has since been released.
