PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL

After a holiday interruption of six weeks the ordinary meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last night, when tho following attended: —Mr J. Watson (Mayor), Ore Lunn, Allan, Reeves, Watson, Coleman, and Anderson. Tho Mayor said that he had attended a meeting of the Soldiers* Memorial Committee and discussed the proposed change of site for the memorial. Ho was getting an opinion from Mr T. F. Martin, and would report later. , A motion of condolence with tire relatives of tho late Mr W. G. Fail, an ex-councillor, was carried.

Mr W. J. Bardaley, secretary of the Otago Harbour Board, wrote regarding contribulion t<* the dock account, stating that ho regretted that the deficit on the working ot the docks, etc., for the year ended December 111 last would exceed £SOOO. Therefore an account for the council’s contribution was enclosed. —Cr Reeves moved that a remission. be asked this year owing to the state of the borough’s finances. —Cr Lunn thought a committee of three should wait on the Harbour Board.—Matter referred to tho Finance Committee. Correspondence was received from the State Forestry Service, Tapanui, enclosing a circular pointing out that the planting season was approaching, and that a very largo stock of planting material was available for distribution on voiy reasonable terms.—Referred to the Reserves Committee, Cr Coleman suggesting that the committee report on extending the water reserves plantations to the top of the hill.—Cr Reeves questioned whether the finances could stand tree-plant-ing at present. Mr L. K. Adcock notified his intention not to renew the sanitary contract expiring on April 30, as he was leaving the dominion. — Referred to Sanitary Committee to arrange for renewal of contract. Mr W. M’Ewan asked for permission to make an entrance to his motor garage in Bums street.—Entrance'to be given. Cr W. Jones forwarded his resignation as a councillor, this being due to business reasons. —Resignation accepted with regret; tho vacancy not to bo filled until the ensuing election of a new council. Mr T. B. Wilson, Rsynoldatown, wanted a footpath, damaged by storm water, repaired.—Cr Reeves said it was a shortsighted policy for the council to put off men who wore needed, as this case showed. —• Works Committee to act Mr J. M. Harland, secretary of the School Committee thanked the council for use of tho Town Hall for the annual school breakup.—Received. The Works Committee reported that for the past six weeks George, Grey, Mount, BeacU streets, end the Square iiad been cleaned up twice a week. Channels and muci tanks have been attended to in Currie, Scotia, Magnetic, Constitution, Harrington, Daly, and Burns streets, also to Blueskrn rond and at Reynolds Town. Grass haa been out in a number of streets. The committee recommended that a? man be put on for another week in order to attend to Beach road and some of the worst places. A quantity of rotten rock had been got out for the dlietrict road, and Mr Fairbalm had undertaken to cart and spread samo for tho sum of £2, which offer the committee accepted. The recent heavy rain had done considerable damage to roads, and some repairs had been effected, but the committee recommended that 24 tons of metal bo procured to be spread principally on the Sawyers' Bay road at an estimated cost of £2O. Sanitary: Drains had been cleared in George ®treet and Kaio lane; Mussel Bay tip levelled and iop-drossed with ashes. By-laws: Tho committee recommended that the attention of the polios Ire culled to the excessive speed of motor cycles on the streets of tho borough, in order that it might be stopped. —Report adopted.—Cr Anderson thought, the council should license vehicles, and' the matter was referred to tho committee. The Finance Committee recommended for pa; merit, eix weeks’ accounts, amounting to £251 15s Bd. Tho receipts totalled £Bl6 Os Bd.—The matter of collecting rent for buildings on ilrs street lino in Beach street was discussed, and it was decided to ask two firms who declined to pay to meet the council. The Gas and Water Committee reported that during December 21 tons lOcwt of coal had boen carbonised at the gasworks for 258,000 cubic feet of gas. Several water services had been repaired. There was a large accumulation of silt in the small reservoir, and the committee recommended that the water officer lie allowed to get u man for Iwo days to assist him to remove same. The last heavy flood caused a rather serious washout in ihe main by-wash, which would require attending to the first time the water was down. In connection with Mr W. R. Snow's application for n- water supply to his residence. Sawyers’ Bay, the committee could not recommend granting same in the meantime as the property was too far from the main. Later the position might be reconsidered if more applications came in.— Report adopted.
