SIXTY YEARS AGO
Tho Nokomni diggings, which are popularly supposed to have been entirely deserted, still continue to give very good results to the few miners who have remained on the ground. Our Invercargill correspondent speaks of one party of four who had cleared, after all expenses, a hundred pounds a month for the last four months. Some fresh finds are also reported to have been made in some gullies in the vicinity of the Nokomai. RUMOURED DISCOVERY OF A LARGE NUGGET. THE INCOMING ESCORT. The following information from tho Dunstan Nines of January 20 was published from this office yesterday in the form of an Extraordinary : , Discovert of a Nugget of 20 lbs Weight. —We are informed on reliable authority that a nugget of the above weight has been found in the vicinity of tho Dunstan. Our informant had the nugget in his hands, and described it as being perfectly pure, free from quartz or ironstone, and of a bright color. He stated that the lucky owner had not had it weighed, fearful that by so doing ho would tie marked and watched. His mates are at Fox's, and ho arrived at the Dunstan yesterday for tho purpose of proceeding thither to bring them back. The exact locality of the discovery is at present unknown, but it conjectured that the nugget was found near the sources of the Manorburn We trust to be in a position to give our readers full particulars in our next issue: meantime, we may add that the fact of the discovery of this largo nugget is undoubted. The Escort.— l he amount of gold deposited for transmission by escort to-mor-row is 7,730 07.3. The amount forwarded from the Lake District, M'Kcllars, Popotunoa, and the Molynoux Ferry to Dunedin is expected to exceed 20.000 ozs. Wo are given to understand that n temporary alteration of tho escort service will take place during tho next fortnight. The escort from the Dunstan will probably proceed via Waikouaiti, while tho escort from the Lake district will join that from Tuapeka at Tokomairiro. This arrangement, it is believed, will continue until the road along the back of the Molyneux is rendered passable.
