WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. SECOND DAY. (Fxb Unwed Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 22. Showery weather prevailed for the second day of the Wellington Raoing Club’s summer carnival. The attendance waa largo and the course was heavy. The racing waa of an interesting nature. The Racing Club Handicap pxovidfed keen speculation, with Merry Day favourite. ' Silver Peak, Paoanui, and Koseday made the most pace in the early stages, but at the business end Merry Day, who was always well placed, took charge. £>he had to suffer a hot challenge from Silver Peak, but won well by half a length, with Scrimmage fairly close up, then came Kick Off and Sunart. In the Metropolitan Handicap the field was fairly well bunched coming into the straight. At the distance Songbird forged ahead, but Kerb came with a late run and won by two lengths, with Astinome and Kinsem next. The Douro Cup was won very decisively by Diamond Ring, from Glencairn. He won his heat in the 100 Yards Club Handicap on Saturday in lOsec, and tho final in 9 9-lOsec, but the latter time was not officially clocked. BOXING. THE M'CLEARY CONTROVERSY. At a meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Council, in Christchurch, the Otago Association wrote asking if M‘Cleary had! been maiched by fhe Timaru Association or any other association for the heavy-weight championship.—The secretary was instructed to reply that the Timaru Association had received permission to promote a contest for tho championship with M'Clcary as one of tho principals. In reply to the council’s correspondence to the effect that the council desired a definite statement as to his intentions in respect to his appeal, M'Cleary wrote that he was prepared to leave tho matter in the hands of the council. —The secretary was authorised lo reply that in the opinion of the council its decision gave M'Cleary certain legal rights, and that if ho desired to avail himself of those rights it remained for him to take such action as his solicitor advised.
