Mr Justice Stringer is spending portion of his vacation in Dunedin. Mr C. E. Statham, M.P.. returned from the north on Saturday night. Mr W. J. Douglas, general manager for Ben and John Fuller and Ward-Fuller (Ltd.), returned north by the second express yesterday, en route for his home at Sydney. Mr W. Sullivan, president of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, left for Wellington by the second express yesterday. Mr K. J. Runciman, of the Farmers’ Cooperative Company, Ltd. (Hawera), returned north by yesterday’s second express. Mr J. Hogg, of Messrs M’Leod Bros., Ltd., will leave to-day for a business trip to Wellington. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Publia Works, will visit the Hermitage, Mount Oook, about the end, of the month. Among the visitors at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, are Sir John Findlay, Sir George Stevenson (London), and Lady Philp (Queensland). Miss Hannah G. Kilpatrick, of Green Island, has been appointed mistress of the Waimahaka School, Southland, and will taka up her duties there-on February 5. Sir William Herrios, who entered a private hospital within the last few days- ixij order to have a complete rest, is stated to bo already showing an improvement. The Mayor of Wellington (Mr R. A; Wright, M.P.), has stated that it is his intention to seek re-election at the next municipal elections to be held in April. Mr J. A. Ihornson (schoolmaster) andMisa Richie (assistant), in charge of the Chatham Island school children, arrived by the second express from the north yesterday. Mr A. H. Robinson has been appointed an assistant on the staff of the Macindrew Road School. Miss Mima Robertson, B.Sc., has been appointed an assistant in -the secondary department of the Tokomairiro District High School. The death occurred on Sunday of Mr Sylvester Whilty, aged 75 years, a resident of Dunedin for over 40 years. He was head storeman with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company for over 30 years, and retired several years ago. JLhc death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital last week of Mr Walter Al'Donald, for two years station-master, at Foxton. Docased was a native of Palmerston North. At the age of 17 he entered tne railway service at Dunedin. For soma years ho was relieving station master at ditrerent North Island stations. Professor J. A. Johnson, principal of the Philip Simth Teacher Training College and Lecturer on Education at Hobart University, is at present spending a holiday in Dunedin. At the recent Science Congress in Wellington Professor Johnson acted aa president of ’the Educational aißl Mental Science Section. Ur Francos Al’Allister. formerly of Stratford, has been offered the position of resident surgeon at the New Plymouth Hospital. Dr M’Allister won a Taranaki scholarship and continued her studies at the Otago University, qualifying in both surgery and medicine at the end of 1921, Air W. J. Stevenson, who has been appointed ofliciul representative of the New Zealand Customs Department for ' Canada and the United States, is an old boy of the Lawrence District High and Otago Boys' High Schools. He was born at Horseshoe Bend, and received his primary school education at the Kae’s Junction School, and entered the Customs Department as a cadet at Wellington in April, 1895, and 11 years later was appointed Collector of Customs, treasurer, and postnnaster to the Cook Islands Administration at Rarotonga. In October, 1921, he returned to the Customs Department as inspector at Wellington. At (he meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council last night opportunity was taken by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Dove) to bid farewell to Air P. O. Wheatley, of the Evening Star, who has accepted a position in the North Island. The Mayor, in wishing Air Wheatley every success in his now sphere, said that he had sat at the press table at nearly every council meeting for the past seven years. Light refreshments were provided, and the departing pressman’s health was drunk most heartily* Mr Wheatley suitably replied.
