M.G.G. v. OTAGO. VISITORS WIN BY SIX WICKETS, Tho match between the M.C.C. an<3 the Otago eleven was concluded at Carisbrook yesterday in fine weather and on a beautiful wicket. In their second strike Otago had lost seven wiokets for 76, M’Mullan being not out with 31. The local team thus had a lead of 56 runs with three wickets to fall on the Englishmen’s first innings total of 222. _ Tho Otago team’s score was taken to 129, M'Mullan adding 38 runs to his Saturday’s total, and getting tho top score of ilia side. 'lhe Grange man played a very ser-’ vice able innings, and was well set when he was stumped when going for a big hit off Freeman. M’Mullan hit the only six of the match. The Englishmen knocked off the 112 runs required to win in a little over two hours’ batting. Wilkinson and Chapman did not stay long, and had tho Otago men been able to get rid of Titchmarsh cheaply they would have had a good chance of pulling off the match. Titchmarsh, however, realised the responsibility which was placed on him, and waited for tho runs to come. Ho was at the wickets 87 minutes for 37 runs. The batting of the Englishmen during the afternoon was not enterprising, and they played M'Boath especially with groat caution. Ca.lthorpe, however, got his rims in fairly quick time. The Otago team are to be congratulated on the excellent fight they made to win the match. M’Beath, Torrance, and A. W. Alloo bowled finely throughout and the fielding reached a high level of excellence. Captain Holland might, however, with advantage have given tho fast bowler Dickinson a turn at the bowling crease in an effort to get rid of Titchmarsh. There was a good l attendance for an off day, and £4B was taken at the gates. On Saturday £270 was taken, and on Friday £92. The Play. M’Mullan was accompanied to the wickets

by Knight at seven minutes past two, the latter opening to Hartley, who hud two balls to go from his uncompleted over on Saturday night. Knight played the over, and M'Mullan faced Freeman, hooking the fourth ball for four and bringing up 80. Knight got a lucky snick to log for a brace off Hartley’s fifth, ball and M'Mullan played a maiden from Freeman. Hartley sent down a maiden to Knight, the over, however, producing a leg bye for two. M'Mullan banged Freeman to the log side for a quartet, and safely played the rest of the over. Knight pulled the second ball from Hartley for, four, bringing up 92 Freeman sent down his second maiden, and Knight faced Hartley. From the second boll Knight was caught off a high hit to Wilkinson, fielding at deep forward leg.— 8—6 —92. M'Beath was the incomer. M'Mullan got four for a drive just out of Titchmarsh’a reach, and stole a single, bringing him opposite Freeman. A single came from Freeman’s over, M'Mullan again getting the bowling. An on shot for a single followed. M'Beath’s second ball from Hartley proved fatal, Chapman taking a fine catch.—9—o—99. Torrance was the last man in. and safely negotiated the rest of the over. M'Mullan brought up 105 with a vigorous off drive for four off Freeman making his total 50 for 65 minutes’ play. M'Mullan gained applause for square cutting Hartley’s first ball of his sixth over to tho boundary, and got another four off the next ball for a similair stroke. The batsman then cooked up a ball-dangerously near Hartley at square leg, off Freeman, and drove a hot one to Chapman at midoff, one being run. M'Mullan was batting with praiseworthy confidence. A snick by Torrance off Hartley went for three, and a smartly run single to M'Mullan followed. Torrance then got four with a fine hit to leg off Hartley, and M'Mullan brought down the house, so to speak, by hitting Freeman over tho rails on the on side for six. He jumped out again to the next ball and was stumped, the innings closing for 129. The last wicket fell at 18 minutes to three. Otago had been batting in all 1 hour 57 minutes and M'Mullan was at the wickets for one hour 15 minutes for his 69 rims. With 110 runs to win Wilkinson and Hill-Wood went to the wickets at three minutes to three, the latter opening to M'Beath. Torrance went on at the other end. Three came off M'Beath’s first over, and two maidens followed. The fifth ball from Torrance’s second over saw Wilkinson beautifully caught by M'Beath at first man. —1 —2 —4. Titohmarsh was the incomer. Tho first four was registered by Hill-Wcod, —a nice off shot off M'Beath. Twenty went on tho board for 24 minutes’ play. Hill-Wood then hit a fine boundary on tho leg side off Torrance and 30 oame up. With the score at 42 A. W. Alloo relieved Torrance at the Glen end, a single being scored off his first over. Hill-Wood made another fine cut to tho boundary off M’Beath, bringing up 50 for 47 minutes’ play. When he hud made 36 Hill-Wood was well caught at extra cover off the second ball of M'Beath’s twelfth over.—2— 36—60, The Englishmen had now been batting just on an hour. Chapman joined Titchmarsh and faced M'Beath. Off his second ball Chapman went for a hit and was well caught by Duncan at forward leg. 3—0—60. Wilson came in and the afternoon tea adjournment was then taken. On resuming at 20 past four Alloo bowled to Titchmarsh. With tho score at 71 Alloo tempted Wilson with a full toss and Knight took a catch at mid-on.—4—o—7l. Wilson had boon at tho wickets for 17 minutes. Calthorpo came in, and made a single off Alloo for a straight drive, and got four for a fine drive from M'Beath’s bowling. Torrance relieved Alloo with the score at 95. and Calthorpo got a single off his first ball. A hundred came up at the end of an hour and 40 minutes’ batting. Titchmarsh. (37) having then been at the wickets 87 minutes. Calthorpo then pulled M'Beath for four, and made the winning hit by nicely square cutting the same bowler to the boundary. The innings closed at five o’clock. Details: Otaco. First Innings. H. 0. Alloo, h Calthorpo 'J 3. Shepherd, b Tvldealey 52 A. W. Alloo, b Calthorpo 5 3. M'Mullan, b Tyldesley S A.
