--In 1856 someone wrote r letter in Demarara, and posted it with a fragile inch of magenta, paper which served as a postage stamp, value 1 cent (one halfpenny). Sixty-six years later that stamp, long since divorced from its envelope, created a sensation by realising £7340 at a public auction. It is the only known copy of the 1 cent British Guiana stamp of 1856. Like many other rare and almost priceless things, it is now in America.
