At Bastrop, Robert Dade, Mayor of Merrouge, admitted being a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, and one of the hooded party which seized Daniels and two ethers a few days before Daniels was tortured to death, and after threatening to lash them, finally released the prisoners. Dado named Dr M'Kain and Skipwith as being in the band. The Mayor also declared that the Klan completely ruled Merrouge, overriding the civil officials.— A. and N.Z. Cable. TERRIFIED WITNESSES. NEW YORK, January 13. (Received Jan. 14, at 11.25 p.m.) A Merrouge message states that witness after witness, including members of the Klan, are terrified. The Klan controlled the parish, and ruthlessly enforced codes of their own. Protests from outraged citizens were adequately dealt with by the head of the parish Klan, who openly boasted that anyone who was unable to keep their mouth chut would be whipped within an inch of their life.—A. and N.Z. Cable. OUTRAGE IN TEXAS. (Received Jan. 14, at 11.25 p.m.) At Goose Creek (Texas) masked men seized and whipped a young widow and a male caller at her home. The woman has fled to Houston for nrotcction. A mass meeting, which was called to- protest against the occurrence, was broken up by individuals, who allowed none to speak.— A. and N.Z. Cable.
