MONTHLY MEETING. There was very little business at (he monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council yesterday, which was attended by Crs 801 l (chairman), ficott, Russel), Driver, Johnstone, Sheat, Gardyne, Renton, Clark, King, and Allen. At the beginning of the meeting the chairman referred to the improved outlook for the country and wished the members a happy and prosperous year, the sentiments being reciprocated on behalf of the council. The clerk, Clutha County Council, advised that the matter of tho engine on the Clyrlevale punt_ had been referred to the engineer.—Received, The Department of Minos wrote that it had been decided to allow the subsidy to stand over until the end of March, as requested.—Received. J. H. Hood, Helensbrook, applied for permission to erect a fence on the roadline of the blind lane opposite bis property.— Permission granted conditionally. T. Quirk, Milton, wrote drawing attention to the state of the road from the main road, Tokoiti, past his property.— Referred to the members for the riding arid the secretary. i The General Manager of Railways wrote that his inquiries showed that the number of stock forwarded from or to farmers in the Clarendon district was very small, and the provision of loading facilities was not an urgent matter.—Cr Driver moved that he and Cr Scott again wait on the district traffic manager, and that the general manager Ire asked to reconsider his decision.—The motion was carried. Mr F. Turnbull and C. C. Croft, Waihola, requested the nrovision of a narrow track cf gravel sufficient to fill in the,water holes in Greerihithe stre.et;—Left to the chairman and engineer, the expenditure not to exceed £5. It was decided to instruct the ranger to institute proceedings against, persistent offenders in connection with cattle grazing on the roads. Messrs A. Peters and J. O’Fee waited as a deputation regarding tho trucking of coal to. the main lino at Taratu. The deputation- was hoard in committee, and? there was a lengthy discussion. Eventually it was decided to do anything required to assist. Messrs Peters and O’Feo and the other miners affected to attain their desires. The dog tsx for the year was again fixed at 2s 6d “all over.” On the motion of Or Clark it was_ resolved to institute immediate proceedings against tho owners of unlicensed traction engines found on the roads. Tho following tenders were accepted; Formarion and metalling at Carrutbers — Johnston and Smith, at £6 5s per chain; 68 chains formation and metalling and filling hole—Johnston and Smith, at. £8 6s ■ per chain; 46 chains formation and metalling at Bogg Station—Johnston and Smith, at- £6- 11s .6d per chain; 35 chains formation at Richards—Walter Allan, at £6 18s per chain ; grading at Tokoiti township— J. Ferguson, at 9s per chain. Cr Scott drew attention to the smallness of the Government audit for the year, this amounting to onlv £6. He moved a vote of thanks to the office staff, this being carried. Cr Driver reported that the county lawyers had been asked for an opinion as to the council’s responsibility for the maintenance of the river banks at Berwick, If tho council was responsible it would bo necessary to-strike a special rate.—The matter was held over, pending the arrival of tho solicitors’ opinion. Tho county inspector reported that a 9in pipe culvert had been put in at the iunction of Coal Gully and Riverside road at Mr Woodhead’s homestead. Tho steel girders in Norfie’s and Dunn’s bridges had been scraped and painted during the month. Fifty tons of Logan’s Point metal had been put down for maintenance on the Wangalon-Kaitangata road between the borough boundary and tho Saddle, and 20 (on* on the Summerill road. The worst hole? in the lower end of the Stonv CreekHiMend road had been filled with stone and, portions of (ho watertables cleaned out. Maintenance gravel had boon put down on tho Main road laelween Milton and Milburn, and on the Tokoiti road between tho borough boundary and Dunn’s bridge. Advice had been received that the steel girders for Thomson’s bridge arrived at Dunedin, and were being sent through to Milton. —file report was adno'ed. Referring to the Stony-Creek Hillend road, Cr Clark said that tractor engine traffic had played havoc. The council would either hav" to make the license fees greater or close tb" roads of the kind_ to traction engine traffic.
