SAD DROWNING ACCIDENT

YOUNG MAN LOSES HIS LIFE. Thomas Gordon, 20 years of iige, single, residing with his parents at Field street, Mornington, was drowned at the cliffs near Waitati at 11 o’clock yesterday morning. In company with Noel and Ernest Clark, of Woodhaugh, he went, to the chffs, about three miles from Waitati, and attempted to swim the channel to the Warrington side. The two boys Clark led the way. and on reaching the other side they looked across and saw that Gordon hud covered three parts of the distance. he threw up his arms and disappeared. They swam out, but could find no Trace of him. The river was dragged by Dr Borrie. of Port Chalmers, Dr fitchett, and Mr F. G. Gumming, of Dunedin, and some local fishermen, and the body was recovered about three and three-quarter hours afterwards. Dr Borrie could only pronounce life extinct. The tide was low and just coming in at the time of the fatality. Deceased was well known locally, and was an active member of the Mornington Presbyterian Church. His parents ore at present on a holiday visit to Auckland, and the news will, no doubt, come as a terrible shock to them. The boy was_ a local engineer, in which line of business his father is also engaged.
