BOWLING.

THE SOUTHLAND TOURNAMENT. DUNEDIN RINK’S SUCCESS. Tho Southland bowling tournament was brought to a successful close on Wednesday when tho Dunedin rink (Bolwell, M‘Crao, Black. Hutchison 19) succeeded in annexing tho Rinks in the final with Mataura (Buchanan, Batchelor, Stewart, Thorn 17). Commenting on tho game the Southland Times says that it was one of tho finest seen in a Southland tournament for many years. Both teams were playing strongly, although Thorn’s second was a weak link and did not play up to form. Nevertheless, Stewart and Buchanan were always handy, but Bolwell, M‘Crae, and Black were keeping them busy and tho outlook of the ends was continually changing. Whenever possible. Thorn kept the ends short, but Hutchison went for the longer ones. In tho first half of the game the Mataura skip held tho advantage by 11 to 7 on the eleventh end. but from that on until the seventeenth ho failed to score, the Dunedin men bringing their score up to 15 Another run placed Thorn again in the load, but he lost it, and with tho last end to go ho was one down. Black was lying one when Thorn burnt the end with his last bowl. In tho re-play the end was most interesting, and most of the bowls wore gathered round the “jack” with Hutchison lying two. Thorn attempted to drive, but missed, and failed, to draw to the “jack” with his last, leaving Black tho winner In the final of the Doubles North End (Cult and Adamson) boat Invercargill (Stringer and Thomson). At the conclusion of play the president of the Southland Bowling Centre (Mr J. Brass) presented the prizes. Ho congratulated the Dunedin visitors on their win, and said that tho final was one of tho most interesting scon at a Southland tournament. Messrs Black and Hutchison were two of the staunchest supporters of tho Southland tournament, and their victory was a most popular one. Except for the small number of entries from outside centres and tho wet weather experienced on Tuesday, tho tournament had' been a very successful one. Mr Black, in reply, said that on every occasion lie had taken part in the Southland tournament ho had had a thoroughly enjovablo time. The centre extended every hospitality to visiting bowlers, and tlie Southland greens were among the bast in the dominion. Mr Hutchison, skip of the Dunedin rink, also thanked the centre for tho hospitality extended to them.
