MOVING PICTURES IN CHURCH
(From Onn Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, December 28. Moving pictures in the church uro not altogether novel in England and America, but in Australia the idea has just been introduced. St. Mary’s, in Fitzroy. a suburb of Melbourne, having the credit of the innovation. The film, which was thrown on to a screen in front of the sanctuary, depicted the life of Jesus Christ. The vicar of the church replied to critics of the innovation by asserting that prejudice was due to “unctuous sanctimoniousness.” As lantern slides had been tolerated there could be no valid objection to the moving picture. It was the intention of the authorities to use the moving picture to serve as a most valuable adjunct in the inculcation of religious truths. Tito departure attracted many people to the church, and although there were some critics, the majority of the congregation expressed their pleasure and appreciation.
