THE SCIENCE CONGRESS

The meeting of tho Australasian Association for tho Advancement of Science, familiarly known as tho A.A.A.S., which is to open in Wellington on i.ne 11th inst., will b« the sixteenth which has been held since the inauguration in 1889 in Sydney. This important gathering of tho scientific men of Australasia has met in rotation in the capital cities of the commonwealth ana <_n two occasions in New Zealand. The Onristchuren meeting of 1891, and that of Dunedin in 1904. were most interesting ana successful gatherings, ihe first local secretary for New Zealand was Captain 1-. -AV. Hutton, of Christcmirch, who was succeeded by Mr Geo. M. Thomson, of Dunedin. Tho present secretary is Professor C. Coleridge rarr. of Canterbury College. Tho Wellington meeting is being arranged bv a local committee, of which Professor H. B. Kirk is chairman, and Mr W. H. B. Oliver, of the Dominion Museum, is bon, secretary. The matters dealt with and the subjects to bo discussed are handled in separate sections, which nr© grouped as follows;—A. Astronomy. Mathematics, and Physics; B. Chemistry; sub-section, Pharmacy ; C. Geology and Mineralogy; D. Biology; E. Geography and History; F. Jvtnuology and Anthropology; G. Social and -"statistical Science; 11. Engineering and Architecture; I. Sanitary Science and Hygiene; J. Mental Science and Educa,tion. K. Agriculture; and L. Veterinary Sciencoi In each section the president is an Australian scientific man, while the vicepresidents and secretaries are New. Zealanders. The president of. tho association for the present meeting is Mr G. H. Kriibbs, director of the Commonwealth Institute of Science and Industry, wno will deliver the inaugural address. A large number of important subjects will -be discussed and papers read at the various sectional meetings, and several interesting evening lectures will bo delivered, of winch two may be specially mentioned, as both the eminent lecturers are well known in New Zealand—" The Life of a Stone-age Savage,” by Professor Sir Baldwin Spencer; and “Antarctic Exploration.” by Professor Sir Douglas Mawson. Both will be illustrated by lantern slides, kinematograph films, and phonograph records. The subscription of £1 carries with it a concession m railway and steamer lares.
