THE WEATHER
The weather was again changeable yesterday, when heavy rain fell in the early hours of the morning. Showers continued occasionally throughout the afternoon, but the weather cleared in the early evening and remained fine. The barometer is rising. The Water of Leith was running high yesterday, and was much discoloured owing to (ho steady rain on the higher watersheds; Reports from country districts also show that the weather has apparently been much heavier than has been the case in Dunedin. (From Oor Own Correspondent.) CROMWELL, January 4. Rain has fallen every day during the present week. Splendid mild showers, some of several hours’ duration, have repeatedly swept the valley, making altogether a very substantial fall. It is many years since such rain has been known in the closing weeks of December and early January. Harvesting and shearing have been practically at a standstill, and mam- shcepowners, who anticipated having their clips off ere this, have not yet made ft start. , Fruitgrowers also feel the conditions, which orb not favourable for gathering and marketing the crop. At present the weather appears to bo more settled.
