BROAD BAY REGATTA

The Broad Bay regatta, which has formed one of the New Year holiday attractions for the residents of Dunedin and the harbour resorts, was hold yesterday. ’The conditions in the early part of the day were not at all promising. Light rain started to fall on the Peninsula about 8 n.rn., and continued for a few hours. By about 11 o’clock, however, the rain had ceased, and as the day advanced the conditions improved, the afternoon being fairly canny. There was a touch of keenness in the wind, however. \which made the conditions a little less enjoyable than they have been on some previous occasions. The attendance was very satisfactory considering the threatening nature of the weather in the morning, but it probably fell short of last year’s by about 500. The sailing and motor boat races were judged by Messrs J. E. Galbraith, E. A. Davys, and A. D. Asher, the rowing events by Mr S. G. Styche, and the swimming contests by Mr W. A. Jenkins, all of whom carried out, their duties in a very satisfactory manner. Other officials who worked hard to ensure the success of the gathering were Messrs T. R. Burt (convener). E. M'Connochie, G. Lindsay, J. T. Paul, J. T. Gillan, T. Brooks, T. M. Grant, D. Palmer. H. Belcher, L. Grigg, and W. H. Parkinson (Shore Committee); Mr Lionel T. Paul (hon. secretary); Mr D. Tennant (hon. treasurer), Mr A. Grant (starter), and Mr J. Johnson (timekeeper). A good full-sail breeze from the northeast prevailed, enabling the sailing boats to contest their races under favourable conditions. A great deal of interest was taken in the 14-foot class, which provided a good race from start to finish. A very successful concert and dance was held in the evening, when the prizes won during the day were presented. An attractive programme was presented, and those who attended spent a very pleasant evening. The following are the results:— SAILING RACES. RESTRICTED CLASS. 14-FOOTERS. Mr B. S.
