A DISTRESSING ACCIDENT

M( )TOR-CYCLIST KILLED. A distressing accident, which resulted in the death of William Hustle, butcher, of 127 South road, Cavorshuni. occurred on the Main North road, at Merlon, between I. and 1.40 p.m. yesterday. Tho deceased was driving a motor cycle and side-chair from Dunedin to Wnilcouaiti, with Charles Philip Muxlcll. caretaker of the Albany Street School, as passenger when the side-chair tyro burst, and the machine overturned, a protruding portion ot Iho crank case striking Haptic on the head, killing him instantly. Madell was thrown out and escaped with slight injury. The deceased’s skull was pierced, his head and faco were badly battered, and his neck broken. Ilastie leaves a wife and seven children, the eldest of whom is about 16. Constable Hayward, of Waikonaiti, and Dr P. F. Ilowden. Palmerston, were summoned, but, on arrival. Dr Ilowden could only pronounce life to be extinct. in a statement to the police Madell said that he and deceased left Dunedin about 11. a.m. yesterday anti were travelling along steadily when, without warning, ho was hurled out of the side-chair. On recovering from the shook ho saw that tho head of the bicycle was turned towards Dunedin —the opposite direction to that in which they were travelling—and that deceased was under the machine. On the arrival of the police, tho deceased was found lying on the road with the bicycle and side-car standing near-by. The motor cycle was practically undamaged, but. the woodwork of the hood of the sidecar was badly smashed. The tyre of the side-oar was flat with a blow-out 6in long near the rim. The body was brought to Dunedin on the 9.25 p.m. express, and was removed to the morgue. An inquest will probably be held to-day.
