UNEMPLOYMENT

Despite tho fact that 1.359.000 unemployed have registered at the Labour Exchanges, this is 600,000 fewer than a rear ago, and an optimistic feeling is spreading regarding trade.—A. and N.Z. Cable. UNEMPLOYED DEMONSTRATORS. WANDSWORTH GUARDIANS LOOKE! UP. POLICE AID NECESSARY. LONDON, December 31, (Received Jan. 1, at 5.5 p.m.)^ An unemployed demonstration interviewed the Wandsworth guardians and demanded help, v/hich was refused, as the majority of the applicants came from the provinces. The men thereupon locked the guardians in th e council chamber. The police tv ere summoned, and they forced thr doors and ejected the besiegers, who marched to Battewea, where they attempted to enter a restaurant, saying that the guardians would pay for their meal. The police repulsed the mob after sharp baton play, during which six men were arrested. two of whom were sentenced to three weeks* imprisonment.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
