NAVY LEAGUE ESSAYS

EXAMINER’S REPORT. THE OTAGO RESULTS. With regard to the Navy League esseya for this year, the examiner, Mr I. Sarginson, reports as follows: ‘Tt was thought that the somewhat changed attitude in the matter of naval defence that resulted from the Washington Conference might have « prejudicial eflect upon the work of the Navy League. Such fears have not been realised to any extent that would at all justify concern for the interests of the Navy League, which, under any conditions of naval retrenchment, would still be needed, perhaps more than ever. The actual facts are that, the number of schools contributing essays lias fallen from 103 last year to 85 this year; Hie. total number of essays - written having fallen from 4689 to 4655, the number submitted to mo being 716 as against 810 last year. All things considered, it is mailer for congratulation that the drop has not been more pronounced. “Several of the writers of senior essays ■were unable to conclude without a distinct note on the glowing importance of aircraft a- a, menace or an aid to naval defence, and as likely to modify profoundly the whole problem. In this there is a suggestion to the leatrue that is 100 evident to need statement. ■ Its programme might well include ships that fly with ships that float. “The subject chosen for the serno v essay this vear —‘The Sea is our Life’—was well

adapted to inspire the scholars for whom it was selected, and has produced some very good work, though the best has tome from the girls. The junior subject—‘British Explorers in the South Polar Regions’—involved a good deal of research, and has doubtless been highly educative in its special department. Perhaps it presented some unusual difficulties. Many of the essays suggest that the teachers have not found it easy to get hold of sufficient material. The general result is distinctly encouraging, and. once more, the ■ league is greatly indebted to the head-teachers and their staffs for their devoted co-operation. “I have touched upon the educative influence of 11 to Navy League essay, but J have also been deeply impressed with the immense good it must accomplish iu the realm of personal character, by bringing, year after year, thousands of our scholars into close contact with the immortal deeds of Britain's noblest men. In the most meritorious essays on Antarctic exploration some important details were of necessity omitted, but few were the writers who omitted to dwell on the sublime tragedy associated with the names of Scott and his companions, and the glorious deeds of Shackelton after the Endurance was crushed in the ice. "In marking the essays I have often thought of the disappointment some of the teachers must feel with the result. It may not be quite superfluous (o point out that in the nature of the case divergencies between the estimates of teacher and examiner are inevitable, at least in many cases. 'A teacher may bo guided solely or mainly by the use made by an essayist of the particular ,instruction he has given : in any case his comparisons are limited to the work done in his own school or class. To the examiner an essay is but one of many hundreds, and its merits cun be decided only by the place it takes with the best from a hundred schools. “Without instituting any comparison of the results obtained by the different schools, I take it that there cun be no objection to mentioning a few of the schools and particular classes that have achieved prominence iu this year's Navy League essays. “Among several essays cf high merit in the senior section, I name Mary Munro Coutts (0.G.1L5.) and Marie E, Hall (Normal School) as first equal with 97 per cent.; Euphie Fletcher (Port Chalmers D.H.S.). second, 95 per cent.; and Bettina M. Collier, 0.G.1L5., third, 93 per cent. For the junior essay I place Jean Rae (Port Chalmers U.H.S.), first, with 95 per cent.; Joan Morrell (0iG.11.5.), second, 92 per cent.; and 11. R. Minn (0.8.H.5.), and Win. Lindsay (Port Chalmers D.H.S.), third equal, 90 per cent.’’ Full details of the results follow: SENIOR ESSAY.
