ORPHANAGE CARNIVAL

Saturday was a big day at the Orphanage Carnival. There was a matinee in the afternoon, when the orphanage children and the pupils of the Sisters of Mercy quite charmed the large audience present with their action songs, gavottes. Irish reels, and other dances. The little people gave a really good account of themselves, and not a few among the audience expressed the hope that the children would be given an opportunity to repeat their entertainment before the carnival closes. In the evening the Commercial Travellers' Choir held the boards for the second part of the entertainment. The attendance was again very large, and the excellence of the programme submitted justified it. Mr George Moarns, “New Zealand’s Harry Lauder,” easily succeeded in making a hit with his humorous ditties, the audience emphatically demanding more. The Tip-topical Quartet Party kept everyone in good humour with their local hits and topical Limericks, Prom first to last everything went merrily. The carnival now commences its third and last week, and the committee reports that so far it has been a financial success. Of course it must bo remembered that the amount sought is very largo, -nd that the expenses are heavy. Following is the position of the queens;—Miss Stewart 1, Miss Blaney 3, Miss M'Donaid 3, Miss Dawson 4, Miss Index 5, Miss Spiers 6.
