OTAGO A. AND P. SOCIETY
SUMMER SHOW. Everythin;; is progressing favourably to make. the. Jonhcoming Summer Show a success. Now that a complete record has been made of the entries received, on the whole they are aior far from what was received last year. One or two sections arc not so well represented as they might be. and wo might mention (bar Clydesdale horses, which this district claims ’as one of its strong features, have not reached the record 'numbers. 'iho committee are disappointed that some breeders who were expected to bo represented have not entered. There is, however, good competition in many of (he classes, and the judge, Mr Thomas Logan, will have to make his selection out of several rings of eight or nine different exhibitors. In (lie draught working horse section, there is a good, allround display, and many of the classes arc well represented. In all the hunting and jumping competitions the entries are equal to former years, and from the horses entered there'is every promise of some close and interesting events. In regard to the sheep and cattle, the merinos, which were at one time one of the features of our show, are now conspicuous by their absence. , The Corriedale. section is represented hv stock from Bushoy Park, Woibao Downs, Woodgrbve, Mocraki Estate. Soulhbridge, and 'others. The grounds are in excellent order, and all operations arc being carried on out there under the supervision of Mr Jim Sutton, whoso experience .and care in handling stock cannot be questioned, so that exhibitors need not fear that their stock will not receive proper attention. The committee have found it necessary to erect over 40 additional sheep pens to provide for the entries received. 1 and have arranged for a plentiful supply of green feed being delivered to tho grounds, which exhibitors can procure at a nominal cost. A truck of sheep arrived somewhat unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, and as tho Tahuna Park line bad not received the official seal as being fit to convey the stock, tho sheep were immediately convoyed to the grounds by wagon, and similar arrangements were made on Saturday. The line will be ready for the conveyance of stock to-day, and for the convenience of exhibitors and tho Railway Department, a telephone connection has been made at the loading bank. Amongst tho numerous applications received, one is from the representatives of tho Overland Motor Car to give a display of a car leaping a space of 14ft over a hurdle, A trial will be made on the grounds to-day, and. if successful, an endeavour will be made to find a suitable place to give the public an opportunity, of seeing this display. The Mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) will declare Thursday afternoon (the People’s Day) a holiday from noon, and the services of the St. Kilda and Pipe Bands have been secured, and all that is now required to ensure success is fine weather, and the generous patronage of the public. Tho Prime Minister, the Minister of Agriculture. and the Minister of Lands have notified the committee that they regret they cannot .be present- at the show, but the Ministry will bo represented by the Hon. \V. Downio Stewart.
