THE RAILWAY TRAFFIC
PASSENGERS TO THE RAGES. LAST YEAR’S TOTAL EXCEEDED. Although the number of passengers to the races at Wingatui on Thursday was more than 200 short of the number that travelled on the first day of last year’s meeting, the total bookings for the two days this year exceed last year’s total by about 700, The great difference in the second day traffic pf the two years is largely explained by the fact that, while good weather prevailed this time, it rained heavily on the Saturday of last year. The figures are as follow: First Day. Second Day. Total, This year ... IEO3 3526 5329 Last year ... 2027 2603 4635 Increase ... 224* 918 694 * Decrease. Probably 3900 in all travelled by the trains between Dunedin and Wingatui on ■Saturday, as a largo number of tickets were not taken at Dunedin, the fares being collected at Wingatui. Therefore the actual increase in revenue will amount to about 1100 lares. The heavy traffic on Saturday must be regarded as a thorough test on the working of the new barriers at the station entrance, and it is a credit'to the stationmaster (Mr R. H. Simons), who planned and directed their erection, that they were so successful in controlling the influx of passengers.
