W.C.T.U.
The ordinary monthly mooting of the AV.C.T.U. was' held in the Hanover Street Baptist 'Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. The president of the union occupied the chair, and based her subject on "Liberty.” Her speech was very apt, and centred round the words: "’Ye have been called unto liberty ; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh ” (Gal. v, 13). Since last month the membership roll was greatly increased, and at the meeting a lady from Scotland joined, and was warmly welcomed. A letter referring to the endowment of mothers was received from the Hew Zealand Labour Party. Discussion was deferred till a future date.’ It was agreed to send a- letter of appreciation to the Mayor (Mr Douglas) for the slnnd ho took regarding Sunday sport. Very satisfactory reports were by the treasurer and the organiser. The various committees reported progress in their special branches of prohibition work. Mrs Mathcwson, delegate to the N.C.W., reported on the attitude taken by the Legislative Council with regard to iho question of women justices of the peace; and in this connection moved the following resolution; —“That this union expresses disapproval of the action taken by the Legislative Council in rejecting the Bill passed in the House of Representatives making women eligible to hold office as justices of the peace, and urges the Prims Minister to bring the matter forward again as a Government measure. ' In connection with Dr Mary Armour's visit, considerable concern was expressed at the lack of hall accommodation in Dunedin, as .wherever she had spoken in the north no hall had been huge enough to accommodate her audience. The union expressed its entire agreement with the Rev. Bush-King in that lie, in a recent sermon, voiced the great need (here is for Christian churches giving more publicity to their faith in the power of prayer as a means of peace; and also with the Rev. Hector Maclean in that he holds “My Country, Right of Wrong,” to bo a dangerous sentiment.
