ST. KILDA COUNCIL
The usual fortnightly meeting of the St, Kilda Borough Council, held last night, was iiHondod by the Mayor (Mr J. W. Dove), and Crs R. Toiler, S. Garbutt, M. H. SeddoD, J. Adam, E. Longworth, K. T. Rosa, <L Stenhouso, P. Carolin, and R. Mercer. WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE. Mr D. Harris Hastings and Dr Gordon Macdonald appeared ns a depmlation from the War Memorial Committee. Mr Hastings outlined the work of the War Memorial Committee had done since its inception. Tilings had not been too satisfactory, but it was hoped to press on tho erection of the memorial as rapidly as possible. Ho felt confident that tho St. Kilda, Borough Council would do its best, and, when the public realised its duty, it would contribute accordingly. Dr Macdonald, who spoke from the historical aspect of the question, made a strong appeal for funds. Tho Mayor said that tho council would give the matter very careful consideration. CAR SERVICE CRITICISED. Cr Longworth said that the c«ir service to St. Kilda was most unsatisfactory; in fact, it was disgraceful. On a recent Saturday ho had waited shortly after 12.30 p.m. for a St. Kilda car, and, on just missing one, had to wait 10 minutes. During that interval three cars had ieft for St. Clair. When he caught a car it was greatly overcrowded, more so than cars in Dunedin usually are. Several perrons had complained of the overcrowding. The Tramways Committee was not giving St. Kilda a- fair deal -there should be more, larger cars on tho lino. The “rush” period was not properly. catered for. Cr'Carolin remarked that far too many “wind-jammers” were put on the St. Kilda line. Evidently the Tramways Committee believed in plenty of fresh air for the women and children on cold days. Several councillors agreed that the service was inadequate. Tho Mayor, the Deputy-mayor (Cr R. Teller), and Cr Longworth were appointed a deputation to wait on the Tramways Committee with a view to securing improvements. -FINANCIAL POSITION SATISFACTORY. The. Mayor, in referring to the financial position of the council, said that ho wqs pleased to announce fhat the council's finances were very satisfactory. When they, as a body, took office, there was a considerable overdraft, through no fault of tho previous council, but they had gradually reduced, this, and by the end of this year the finances would ho greatly improved. He congratulated the town cleik (Mr W. G. Griffin) and his staff on their capable work during the.jcar, and said that the present satisfactory position was largely due to their efforts, —("Hoar, hear.”) GENERAL. An application by Mr' T. A. Kitchen for the transfer of a billiard room license from Mr M. O'Connor was declined. ■ Messrs Proctor and Mee wrote drawing the attention of the council to tho condition of their shop in King Edward road, which badly needed painting.—Referred to Crs Mercer, Longworth, and Adam for a report, Mr J. A. Bilsey, 4 Albert street, wrote drawing the council’s attention to tho ineffective statu of the water-supply in his house at- Bowen street, as his tenant could not obtain an adequate supply of water. The Mayor said that this complaint was the first received from residents in Bowen street, and that the other houses hod not been affected. Unfortunately, the whole town suffered from a shortness of water during dry weather, bu't when the work at the reservoir wa-s completed there should be a considerable improvement. Probably there was some trouble with the cistern in the house. Cr Longworth said that it peculiar that only one house was affected. St. -Clair, which was usually troubled with any shortage of water, was not affected. The council's plumber was instructed to attend lo the matter.
