BOWLING.

NORTH-EAST VALLEY CLUB. THE SEASON OPENED. Beautiful weather, a large attendance of members and visitors, and a well-organised l series of competitions wore responsible for an .extremely successful opening function at the North-East Valley Bowling and Tennis Club du Saturday afternoon. The green anti the courts were in splendid condition, and the catering, in the hands of the ladies’ section, was all that could be desired. The fifts received at the social on the previous aturday evening were sold at a stall in charge of the ladies, and by this means a respectable sum was raised. In formally declaring the. green open, the prudent,(Mr J. Rhodes) extended a hearty welcome ■to visitors and friends. Referring to the now pavilion, he said that less than a year ago it was a dream; that day saw the realisation of the dream. The club had departed from its usual custom of playing a 21-head President v. Vice-president game on the opening day, and had substituted a drawing competition, a game of skittles, and series of five-head games. The Mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) said that the club's new pavilion was a credit not only to the Valley Club, but to the bowling community as a whole. He congratulated the members on their success in erecting sucti a commodious and up-to date builamg, and wished them further success in the future. Mr W. Jacobsen, president of- the Dunec(in Centre, also congratulated the club on its successful venture, and remarked that it was fortunate in possessing an energetic president, supported'by a" number of enthusiastic members. After the first bowl had been “rolled up" hy the president’s grand-daughter, Miss Rosetta Rhodes Justice, the green was at once occupied by visitors and members alike who were anxious to “try their hand” in the several competitions.
