MINING

MOUNT LYELL COMPANY. The following progress report of work in the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company (Ltd.) mines for the fortnight ended August 23 Ims come to hand: Mount Lyell mine; In-the No. 5 level the main pillar heading waa extended ts 120 ft in pyrites and connected with the North end, the cross-pillar heading was extended to 97ft in pyrites.- North Lyell mine; In the 700 ft level, No. 16 rise to 147 ft in schist. 1000 ft level, No. 8 North drive, to 199 ft in good grade ore. Reduction works: One furnace was in blast for 11 days during the fortnight, and 8266 tons of blister copper consigned to the refinery for the current year. Concentrator: The mill operated 318 hours and treated 3571 tons of ore, producing 359 tons of jig concentrates and 717 tons of flotation concentrates. RISE AND SHINE, . The Rise and Shine dredge had a steady tun last week, • and got over a fair area of ground. It was somewhat castor to work than it bad been, but prospects wore patchy. Bottom' of soft yellow clay, with some patches of hard white clay, was got at an average depth of about 42ft.
