Mr H. G. Ell, ex-M.P., is announced as a candidate for the Christchurch South seat as an Independent Radical (says a Press Association message), Mr D. Wall, who is probably the senior active yachtsman of Otago Harbour, is about to remove to Wellington. This fs on account of the upholstery branch of the Marino Repairs Works at Port Chalmers being about to be transferred to the capital city. Mr Wall has been a keen yachtsman for a number of years past. Ho at various times owned some of the leading yachts in the harbour, and he has, in addition to the yacht nices won here, also won vacht races at tho • other leading ports of New Zealand, including Auckland. Mr Wall has been interested in marine motoring, and as a flower grower has won prizes at numerous flower shows. >
Sir A. Mathioson, representative of the London Morning Post, was a visitor to the Navy League annual conference at Wellington. Mr J. Stanaway, of the Magistrate’s Court staff, Invercargill, has been transferred to Greymouth. Mr Walter Traill has resigned the position of postmaster at Paterson’s Inlet, after a term of 31 years. Mr W. M. Luke (South Island representative for the Canadian Government Maripo, Ltd.) is at present on a business visit to Dunedin.
Dr Douglas H. Saunders left Dunedip. yesterday to join the Port Chalmers at Wei lington for London. Ho expects to return to 'New Zealand towards the end of next year.
The Rev. H. E Bellhouse. minister in charge of tho Taranaki Street Methodist Church, Wellington, has accepted the invitation of the local Trinity Methodist Church to [become the minister for next year. The change wll take place in April. Mr Thomas F. O’Connell, recently , head master of the Tahgkopa School, has received an appointment on the staff of the Clutha Leader as sub-editor and reporter. A London Press Association cable message announces the death of Miss Elizabeth Bidwell, aged 91 years. She was th e remaining survivor of Florence Nightingale’s Crimean nurses.
Detective Lambert, who was injured in the recent shooting affray at Hamilton, has been transferred, to Auckland, He will be succeeded by Detective F. Culloty, of 1 Palmerston North.
A Napier Press Association message states that there will b© five candidates out for the "Napier seat at the General Election: Mr J. Vigor Brown (the sitting member), Mr Nat Beamish (Liberal-Labour), Mr J. Mason (Reform), Mr L. MTlvride (Labour), and Mr E. Mulvanah (Independent Labour). Mr M. Hawkins, Inspocto’ - of , Prisons, and- Superintendent of the Borstal Institution, who has been in Invercargill for the past five vVeeks,' has left for Auckland. The death occurred in England on July 23 of Mrs Elizabeth Penelope Allen, widow of tho late Mr Will him Shepherd Allen, a well-known colonist, at the age of 75 years, Mrs Allen, whose maiden name was Cnandlish, arrived in New Zealand from Staffordshire in 1685, and settled with her husband and family at Annandale, Morrinsville. Mrs Allen frequently visited England, and took up her permanent residence there when her husband died some years ago. . Among her family are Lieutenanhcokmol R, C. Allen, D. 5.0., and Lieutenant-colonel , S. S. Allen, C.M.G., D. 5.0., of Morrinsville.
. .A Westport Press Association message says that yesterday Mr G. G. Aitken. Rhodes Scholar for 1922, was tho recipient of a presentation pnrse containing £ll from the teachers and pupils of the Westport District High School, of which he has been a pupil, dux medallist, and teacher. In tho evening he was entertained .by the citizens at an “At Home” in the Theatre Royal, and was made a recipient, through tho Mayor (Mr Menzios), of a purse containing over £240, The Mayor and Mr Harkness, principal of tho school, made speeches in the course o f which they reviewed Mr Aitken’s career as a pupil of the school, teacher, athlete, bud footballer, and stated'that he admirably filled the bill of Rhodes Scholar, and should worthily uphold the best traditions of such scholars. Mr Aitken spoke in reply. He leaves for Wellington on Honda - and plays for Wellington against Hawke’s Bay, his final football match before leaving for the Old Country to pursue his studies at Oxford College.
