DUNEDIN PHILATELIC CLUB
A well-attended meeting of the Dunedin Philatelic Club was held on Thursday evening, Mr J. Pemberton, vice-president, taking the chair. The hon. secretary submitted a statement showing the finances of the club to be satisfactory, and two new members were elected. The usual “Dutch” auction of stamps was hold. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr J. M‘Ara), who was to have displayed a further section of his fine New Zealand collection, a member presented for inspection a specialised-’collection of the Queen Victoria issues of Great Britain and British Levant. The line-engraved emissions from the house of Perkins, Bacon, and Co., were well represented, and from the interest taken it was clear that the “Penny Black” of 1840, tho “Mother of Postage Stamps,” will continue to hold an increasingly high place in the affections of the stamp enthusiast. ’ Among some very nice copies ot tile early adhesives was shown a mint pair of the scarce “Royal Reprints” of 1865, Among the later surface-printed issues was to be seen a superb used copy of the 1893 Constantinople _provisional, 40 paras on halfpenny vermilion. This stamp, in use- for five days only, is seldom met with. Later in the evening tho same exhibitor displayed a collection of “portrait” stamps. With the aid of copious notes he demonstrated the very high value of this typo of collection from a. history-teaching point of view, and voiced as his opinion that much might be- accomplished in this direction by encouraging the young collector along sane lines. .
