PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY
The Philharmonic Society is placing’before its subscribers at its second concert for the season on Tuesday next, the first movement of the noble work, “Patiietique” Symphony of 'pwkukowsky. The orchestra has given the movenipnt/ careful study, and a creditable perfonriarioe of this number may be anticipated. It is in this work that is found that passion of despair that permeates so much of Tsohaikowsky’S' finest music, rising to the highest tragic significance. The “Ruy Bias” overture should prove an attractive item, as it is bright and melodious and from the master hand of Mendelssohn. Dvorak’s ”Slavonic Danoe” is always acceptable,- and'is not unknown to subscribers. , Miss, Frazer’s playing of Max Bruch’s violin concerto will no doubt prove the attraction of tho concert, for it is her first appearance in public, and She is a young lady of great promise. A symphonic poem, “Pan and Echo” (Sibelius) is a very delicate and dainty composition, and entails somo good work from the reed section of the orchestra. Small string pieces complete the orchestral part of the programme. . Mr Mann, of Melbourne, who gave pleasure by his artistic singing at th© last concert, is down for a couple of songs, “Life” (Blumenthal) and “The Two Grenadiers” (Eubenstein), and Miss Meda Paine should be heard to advantage in “Depuis le Jour” (Charpentier), “Secrecy” (Wolf), and “Love Went Ariding” (Bridge).
