VAIN LABOUR DREAM
SHORT HOURS; HIGH WAGES
“RICH ARE NECESSARY.”
LONDON, June 15. In a statement with regard to conditions at Broken Hill, Air F. A. Govett, chairman of the Zinc Corporation, attacked the. union leadens for their “infernal policy of go-slow and oastiron tyranny,” and expressed surprise that capable and ambitious workmen should surrender themselves to such people. The dream that Labour should do little work and enjoy short hours and a luxurious wage was unattainable. Workmen must learn that they must work hard to live, and that the rich are absolutely necessary to a complete social organisation. “I do not expect that these remarks will be hailed with a welcome,” he concluded, “but they will give the workers something to think about, because on the present lines industry at Broken Hill is crippled.”
