The Minister of Public Works stated last night that, now sleepers are to hand, pro-gress»will-be made with the Eskdale section of the East Coast railway. The laying of the track will be proceeded with almost immediately, and a locomotive will be on the West Shore section in three weeks. The Hon. J. G. Coates said that he hoped to liave the plate-laying to Eskdale completed in four months, and the line handed over to the Railway Department in about six months. In reference to the NapierGisborne section, the Minister stated that since 1910 the following amounts had been expanded:—Napier and northwards, £183,200; Wairoa and northwards, £15,675; Gisborne and northwards, £237,397; —total to date, £436,362. On the Waikokopu branch of the railway £160,875, exclusive of permament way, had been spent since 1919. The Hon. J. G. Coates and the Hon. W. Downie Stewart return to Wellington today.
