The Secretary of the Commonwealth Postal Department (Mr Oxenham) explained that the agreement mentioned in the cable announcement. regarding the Oceanic Steamship Co. and the Government referred to the United States Government, and not to the Commbmvealth Government, which shipped its mails by the Oceanic and Union services on poundage rates. [A Washington message stated that Mr Samuels, assistant president of the Occanio Steamship Company," had announced that a discontinuance of the' San Francisco-Aus-tralia service would result shortly after Jujie 30 if the Government failed to renew the 'mail carrying contract.]
