CONDUCTING A SWEEPSTAKE
MAGISTRATE’S COMMENTS. (Pu Unitid Press Association.) AUCKLAND. May 5. When three young men pleaded guilty at the Police Court with having conducted a sweepstake on the Mangero Handicap the solicitor who appeared for them stated that his clients only deducted 2s 6d for themselves from the stakes, the balance going to the winner of the sweep. ‘‘lt is a small matter very* frequently indulged in on racecourses, but it is against the law and people must be made to know it,” said Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M. Chief Detective MTlveney: The penalty is up to £2OO. Some people go from racecourse to racecourse and make a good,thing out of it. Advertisements are put in the newspapers by racing clubs stating that this sort of thing is not allowed, and those offending will be put off the course and prosecuted,’ so those people know the risk they run. _ Mr Poynton : “They should all know the risk they run Some clay an offender will be fined the full penalty of £2OO. People must remember this is against the law If they break the ia.w in small things unchecked they will be liable to defy it in bigger things. Baoh defendant will be fined £3.”
