GENERAL NEWS

The thrice-weekly mail service to Macraes and Green Valley re commenced on Monday (says our Palmerston correspondent). After the bi-weekly service which has been run for the last few months, (he change will be much appreciated by the settlers in those districts. The annual picnic of the Middlemarch Brass Band was held on Friday last in a field lent for the purpose by Mr C. Patterson. Although the weather was somewhat inclement a large number of people gathered to enjoy the excellent programme of sports and kindred events arranged for the entertainment of young and old. Musical items from the band helped to enliven the proceedings. Racing events were won as follows: —Young Ladies’ Race—Miss W. Mason. 1; Miss M. Mason, 2. Married Ladies* Race—Mrs J. Slater, ElderlyMen’s Race—A. Cockerell and A. Guild. Bandsmen’s Race—J. Turnbull and J. Renwick. A variety of children’s races were run off. In the evening a band concert was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Hall when the building was filled to its seating capacity by an appreciative audience. The concert programme included solos from Messrs G. Horn, R. Wellsted, and Misses W. Renwick, E. Robertson, Mrs Finnic, and Miss D. Macauley; and clarionet solos by Mr W. Burke. The band rendered selections, including “Lucrezia Borgia,” and “Land of the Shamrock.” Mr J. Elliot presided at the monthly meeting of the North-East Valley School Committee, Mrs G. B. Elliot, Messrs Campbell, Swan, Ililliker, little, and Bardsley being also present. It was decided that two danger signs for motorists forwarded by the Otago Motor Club be erected on the poles granted by the telegraph department. The City Council having presented two machine guns to the committee, it was resolved to place these trophies in the passage between Standards V and VI. It was reported that the school fife and drum band had scoured the services of Mr Baldock, late conductor of the Queen’s Regiment Fife apd Drum Band (England), os conductor. It was resolved to have an official opening of the new school for the infant department yvhen the erection of it was complete.
