WAIKOUAITI SHOW

The Waikouaiti Agricultural and Pastoral , Association’s ninth annual summer show was held on the Recreation Ground at Waikouaiti | yesterday. The weather continued fine upto close on 5 o’clock, though a strong cold northerly wind swept the ground and made matters uncomfortable. Shortly before 5 o’clock rain foil, and with it tho wind died, down. The attendance was fairly large, and to a very large extent was local in character, though a ntimborcame from Palmerston. The liberal admission of post ento.es materially increased the difficulties alw-uys experienced at an agricultural show and did not tend to expedite the work of the officials It seems rather remarkable t’aal intending exhibitors cannot make their minds 24 hours before a show actually commences. The entries were said to lihc.w an increase on those of last show, but; -details were not available. The exhibits co nsisted largely of cattle and horses. Tit© cattle woro a fair lot, but did not present outstanding excellence as a whole. Tib a shorthorns were probably the pick so far as trueneas to type was concerned. They were a good class, and the bull was amongst tho very best of the animals paraded, There were some fair cattle amongst the Ayrshires, and something a bit superior was met with in Mr P. Ireland’s « ged bull Tho dry cow was also a good ai limal, but it was too far from calving to sb ow to advantage against the cow in re ilk which captured the championship. I - a draught horses these placed at the top of the list were fairly good, but apart f rqm these ■ there was nothing of special quality. The marcs and fillies were in a general eense superior to the horses. There was a very creditable display in thoroughbreds and ponies, and some good animals were included in this section of tho show. There were some animals suitable ior harness amongst the coaches and hacks, but they could have stood a _ bit more breeding. More attention requires to b) paid to breeding. In the shed allotted to the produce exhibits there were soma -examples of skill, and it is a matter for .regret that there was not greater competition. This is* tho opinion strongly expressed by the judge, Miss Kempshcll. At the -conclusion of the judging a parade of stock was held, and proved an interesting spectacle.
