It was announced at a meeting of the Australian Board of Control in Melbourne last week that the profits . of the Australian eleven tour in Britain amounted to £17,700. Each player and the manager wore awarded bonuses of £590. The sum of £IO,OOO will be divided equally among the six States represented on the board. TUie report and balance sheet of the manager of the Australian eleven, Mr Sydney Smith, jun.. showed that the takings ter the whole tour amounted to £35,713, and the expenditure £17,976, leaving a credit balance of £17,737. The gate takings for the 1912 tour amounted to £7367. The gate increase_ was attributed by Mr Smith to; (1) The increased charge of admission to the various matches; (2) the abnormal weather conditions experienced from the commencement to the end of the tour; (3) the increased enthusiasm displayed by the public; (4) the popularity of the team; and (5) I that this was the first Australian eleven to visit England after the -war. Mr Smith said the increase in the cost of living had been very considerable, and consequently the expenses were now very much heavier. For instance, the fares for the team in 1912 amounted to £2122, whereas the amount involved in this tour was £4322.. Hotel expenses were also more than double, railway expenses likewise, and tipping and other items. increased accordingly. Roughly, the team had travelled 33,500 miles since leaving Australia—namely, 26,000 miles by boat, 4266 miles by train and motor in Great Britain, and "3234 miles by train in Africa.

The board decided that, first of all, the three associations of Victoria, Now South Wales, and South Australia, which had financed the last tour, should bo recouped to the extent of £l4ll, that each of the 15 players and the manger should receive a bonus .of £3OO, the baggage man and scorer a bonus of £IOO, and the manager of the Australian eleven in New Zealand a bonus of £IOO.

Of the balance, it was decided to divide £IO,OOO equally among the ■ six States represented on the board, and to hold the balance of £1325 in the funds of the board. The arrangement was that each player was to receive, in addition to all travelling expenses, £4OO for the English tour, and £66 13s 4d for the’South African tour.’ Consequently each player will now receive £766 15s 4d for the two tours. ' • . The aggregate score in a match, finished inconclusively this week, between the Wanganui representative team and the Nomads ’touring team is one of the highest recorded in New Zealand. Wanganui made 310 and 317, while the Nomads scored 352 and 27 ior no wickets. billiards. M‘CONACHY’S STRONG POSITION. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON. Jaripary .13.
