The sea is moderating. Arriving vessels report a rough time. The fruit crops suffered severely-from the storm. THE NAVIGATION ACT. SYDNEY, January 4. The Department of JS a/vigation has issued regulations modifying the provisions of, the section of the Navigation Act which requires vessels of over 15 tons to carry from one to three boys. The provision is altered to vessels of exclusively on the Australian coast. Over-, sea vessels will still carry the original number. GERMAN-AUSTRALIAN STEAMSHIP COMPANY. SYDNEY, January 4.. The commonwealth revenue for the half-year was £15,084,000, compared with £16,718,000 for the previous corresponding half-year. The postal receipts increased by £579,000. The Customs was responsible for tile decrease. FEDERAL FINANCES. MELBOURNE, January 4. Although the Federal Government took power to issue a new loan, it is now believed that there wfll be no needier mpre, loan money during the current financial year. > ■ -* . COMMONWEALTH AIR SERVICE. 1 MELBOURNE, January 4. In view of the reductions made in the Defence Estimates, the Federal Government is compelled indefinitely to postpone the establishment of two proposed squadrons of seaplanes, and the active Aeroplane squadrons will be reduced from 12 to four machines per squadron. PASTORAL FINANCE ASSOCIATION. AMALGAMATION SCHEME DROPPED •y • : SYDNEY, January 4. Shareholders ’of the' -Pastoral Finance Association refused to ratify the amalgamation scheme proposed after the disastrous fire at its stores, and instead decided to invite tenders for the purchase of the business. In consequence the- Cooperative Wool and Produce Company withdrew from all negotiations to absorb the concern. It is understood that the business has been secured by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. , (Received Jan. 4, at 10.10 p.m.) The Pastoral and Finance' Association has announced the sale of its business to /the New Zealand Loan and Agency' Company' on satisfactory /terms. Orton, who was arrested" in connection with the Badak tin mine case, was remanded till January 10. Bail was fixed at £SOO, with a personal bond' of £SOO. QUEEN SLAND-FINANCES. BRISBANE, January 4. The revenue for the half-year amounted to £5,266,000, against £5,456,000 in 1920. The expenditure was £6,265,000, compared with £6,086,000 in 1920. The deficit, was £1,009,000,* against £629,000 in 1920./ FAIR RENTS COURTS. SYDNEY, January 4. The applications lodged in the Fair Rents Courts in 1921 totalled 1125. Reductions of from 6d to 19s 6d were allowed in 278 cases, and increases of from 6d |o 24s 6d wore allowed in 276 cases. NEW SOUTH WALES. POLITICS. SYDNEY, January 4. (Received Jan. 4, at 10.10 p.m.) After a Cabinet meeting Mr Dooley (Premier) said that ho did not proposeto announce the date of the elections until he had delivered a policy speech. Cabinet has decided to put into immediate operation the clause in the new Electoral Act proriding for compulsory! enrolment. The new taxation proposals provide for the abolition of the super-tax. SYDNEY BUILDING TRADE. fi K j FOR 1921. SYDNEY, January 4. (Received Jan. 4, at 10.10 p.m.) The now buildings erected in the city and suburbs during .1021 numbered 8537, at a cost of £9,655.163, compared with 10,015 erected in 1920’' at a cost of £9,273,659. The expenditure in 1921 is a record. y MiELBOURNE TRAGEDY. MELBOURNE, January 4. (Received Jan. 4, at 10.10 p.m.) The Government is offering a reward of £250 for the discovery of the murderer of Alma Lirschke. [The naked body of a girl named Alma Lirschke, age-d 12, was found on Saturday in a lane off Little Collins street. There was evidence that she had been outraged and strangled to death, and the body subsequently carried into the lane. The girl was sent on an errand -from Jolunout on Friday afternoon, and failing to reach her destination she was reported missing. The police have no clue as to the place where the murder was committed, or as to tho identity of the perpetrator.]
