GALE IN SYDNEY HARBOUR
BARQUE’S NARROW ESCAPE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, January 3. The barque E. *R. Sterling, anchored m Sydney Harbour, narrowly escaped being driven ashore in Athol Bight the height of the storm. _ The vessel, dragged her anchors, necessitating the captain seeking the assistance of two tug-boats, which held the ship after a couple of hours’ struggle. The hurricane continued throughout the night, the coast line being swept by wind howling along at a velocity of a mile a minute. Mountainous seas rolled crashing on the beaches. River bars are reported dangerous, and vessels are unable to enter or leave. There are signs of the weather breaking this morning, though a continuance of the gale is forecasted. A later message states that the storm has abated. It is still raining, and the sea is heavy. •
