FROM THE Otago Daily Times. “Inveniam viam aut faciam.” MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1861. Shipping Intelligence. Otago Daily Times.

(From our Port Chalmers Correspondent.) Port Chalmers, December 6, 1861. The Bay is again becoming thin. During the N.E. winds which have prevailed for the last week, the steam-tug Samson. Capt. Dove, has been constantly and well employed, giving such ships as the Ocean Chief and Versailles good offings during one tide, then taking two and three out. at the same time. She is the only boat now left-—without her assistance vessels with such winds would not be able to get to sea . . During last week, 23 miners left Otago for the neighbouring colonies, with parcels of gold varying from lOozs to 60ozs, amounting in all to bOOozs. What a pity they have no means offered them for investment here, ... As the Lord Ashley was leaving, she was boarded by A. C. Strode, Esq., the Resident Magistrate of Port Chalmers, and by Captain Walsh, of the brig Fortune, who insisted on detaining one of the passengers. Mr Barnes, a shipping agent, on the score that he was running away to escape payment of a dishonoured cheque for £2OO, given, to Captain Walsh for freight. This gentleman accompanied his prize to Dunedin, but on application to Mr Harris for a warrant his Worship declined to grant it, considering the case to bo one for a civil rather than a criminal court. We understand that a now Executive is not yet formed. Mr M’Glashan declined to form one. We presume the task will fall on Mr Dick, and wo do not see how he can decline it unless, ae some people have it, he is anxious to have a try in for the Superintendent himself. . . .
