SALE OF PAINTINGS
A CHRISTCHURCH AUCTION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH. December 8. A large number of paintings, studies; and sketches, left by the well-known Dutch artist, Petrus "Van Der Velden, were offered at auction to-day under instructions from the Public Trustee. The collection, which included 4.78 catalogued items, represented all periods of the artist's work, and included a number of large canvases, principally Australian and New Zealand landscapes, "and Dutch genre subjects. The too price realised was £l5O for a large imaginative landscape in oils, representing cliff-bound coasts in a storm. Two paintings of Dutch funeral scenes—a favourite subject with the artist—fetched £75 and £SO respectively. These three, with several others, went to a. Wellington buyer. Among the works passed in was a bright little painting of a Dutch girl, entitled "Meditation," dated 1871, and stated to be a companion picture to one in the National Museum at Amsterdam. The' best bid was 60 guineas. Water colours and sketches realised from half a guinea to five guineas apiece.
