Monday, October 24. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Drunkenness.—A first offender for drunkenness was fined 20a, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Alexander M'Lennan, once previously convicted within the past six months, was fined 20s, in default three days’ imprisonment. Theft.—William Herbert Vincent pleaded guilty to the theft of a pair of boots valued at 355, the property of May Lambert. — Senior Sergeant Lewin stated that the boots ■were placed on a shelf outside the shop (City Boot Palace) at 0 a.m. on Saturday, and were missing at 1 p.m. The assistant notified Constable Usmar on the street, and an hour later the constable saw the accused wearing a pair of new boots (green hide) answering to the description given of the missing ones. He asked the accused where ho got them, and the accused said he bought them from a man on the street for 15s. Further questions resulted in the .constable remain mg unsatisfied, and ho took the accused to the police station, where he admitted having committed the theft—The accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. Charge of Bookmnking.—William Valentine Forrester was charged that on October 24, and on other days between that date and July 23, at Dunedin, he carried on the business and occupation of a bookmaker.— Chief Detective Bishop asked for a remand till Friday, and this was granted. Bail was allowed in the sum of £2OO, with one surety of a lika amount.
