GENERAL NEWS

The Salvation Army gave a very successful concert on Saturday to celcorate the tnirty-lourth anniversary ol taeir arrival in •Mosgiel. Ihe Army Hall was more tuan comiortably lilted by an enthusiastic) audience oi weJi-wishers who seemed to enjoy the musical programme provided. After the usual opening exercises ot hymn and prayer the East iaieri Church choir gave an excellent rendering ot an anthem, winch was followed by a skilful piece ot instrumentation in tne form ot a cornet duet by Bandsmen Judd and Burgess, who later in the evening contributed another duet. Both duets were highly appreciated, as was the cornet solo by Bandsman Judd. The Baptist Church choir and the Presbyterian* Church choir contributed anthems and quartetes in a spirited and pleasing manner, while Nurse Saunders, Mrs M’Kegg, Miss Hicks, and Messrs March and Ai'Dougatl gave some very enjoyable solos. The Misses Owens and Messrs M'Pheat rendered a couple of very taking duets. Mrs Weston gave a short address, and Mr De Bidder gave a lively march on the organ. The Rev. Mr Foote made an excellent chairman, and after Ensign Briddook had returned thanks ou behalf of the Army, the Doxology was sung and refreshments were handed round by a small but active band of Salvationists. A very successful social evening was hold in the Presbyterian Church Hall at Ravensbourne, on Saturday night. Tho earlier part of the evening was taken up with a short programme entirely carried out by the Boy Scouts. Tho chairman (Mr Galloway, jun) apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Rev. A. Gray, who is senior scoutmaster and troop chaplain. Mrs Anderson then called upon Scoutmaster r J reurn. who was tho guest of the evening, and on behalf of the scouts presented him with his commission us assistant- scoutmaster, a scoutmaster's badge, and a small volume of Scott’s poems. Mr Tvcurn suitably replied. A very enjoyable evening olotsed with the National Anthem and Benediction.
