Drunkenness.—A first offender for drunkenness was fined 20s, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Rogue and Vagabond.—John Hussy pleaded not guilty to a charge of being deemed a rogue and vagabond in that he had insufficient lawful means of support.— Senior-sergeant Lewin stated that (he accused had called on two business men and had asked for money, first for a shilling, and ’on this being refused for 9d. r J he accused had been knocking about hotels for some time past, and had been doing no work. He had asked oeoplo on the streets for cigarettes. Francis James Meldrum and William James M'Donald gave evidence.— Sergeant M’Kntee said that to his knowledge the accused had done no work for five months. He was frequently in company with a convicted thief, hurther evidence was given by Constable M Culloeh (who said that the accused could make good money, being one of the best battle dealers in town) and by Constable (iriffin —The accused stated that he had been out of work with a bad leg, and asked for a chance, saving that be would give np the drink.— Senior-sergeant Lewin. in response to the Magistrate, said that there was a long list of previous convictions (45 altogether) against the accused for various offences. The occused had contributed nothing towards the support of his wife and family for three years.—The Magistrate said he would give the accused a chance. The accused was convicted, and ordered t-o come no for sentcnco if called nn wimm 12 months, a condition to be tbit took out a prohibition order against himself.
