NOTORIOUS CHINESE GENERAL,
ESCAPE FROM PEKING,
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 7. (Received Aug. 8, at 8.15 p.m.) Chinese advices state that the notorious General Hsu Shu Chen, the leading spirit in the recent Yangtze disturbances, escaped from Peking when he was defeated. He took refuge with other leaders in the Japanese Legation. The Peking Chinese Government condemned the traitors to death,,and established a military cordon around the Legation. Hsu Shu Cher), was smuggled through the cordon in a trunk as officer’s luggage, and reached Japan. Later he returned to China, where he recommenced his depredations.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
