BOXING.
OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Otago Association's boxing championships were commenced last evening in the Kensington Drill Shed. Mr S. S. Myers was master of ceremonies, Mr J. Kilmariin referee, Messrs C. Bat.t and C. Lawrence judges, and Mr J. E. Marshall timekeeper. Tho contests were of three rounds, each of three minutes. Mr Myers raid (hat tho winners of the championships would be open, for selection to represent Otago at the New Zealand championship tournament to be held next month at Creymouth. He also stated that the association had arranged for a professional contest to bo held in Dunedin on August 12 between Lcs (Murray, of Dunedin, and Mi<fk Rutherford, of Australia. BANTAMS. W. Rowe 8.1 beat T. Campbell 8,3,
Neither boxer showed much science in the first mind. Campbell relied mostly on a jump inside his opponent’s guard, following with a straight left, wliich, however, did not appear to carry much weight. A lot of infighting took place in tho second round, but tho exhibition was ‘ not very attractive. In the final round there were sonic solid exchanges, meet of the fighting being in the clinches. There was not much between tho two men.
L. Drew (Dunedin) 8.2 beat S. Harvey (Invercargill) 8.3. Drew gave a nice exhibition of two-handed boxing in tbc first, round, and had more lingcraft than tho Invercargill hid. Harvey fought gamely in the second round, but Drew scored well with short-arm blows to the body. In the final round Harvey was inclined (o kck his opponent’s left arm, and suffered some colid body punches from Drew’s right as a consequence, Harvey scored well on three occasions with a straight left to tho head. There was no doubt as to the result. FLY-WEIGHTS. T. Griffiths 6.8 beat W. Bur ridge 7.0. A fine, open exhibition of boxing took place. Griffiths scored repeatedly with a straight left, and also missed a lot of blows by ducking and backrnoving. Burridge, who had the longer reach, scored at times with a, straight left, but seldom brought Ids right into play. Griffiths, who is only a boy, was loudly cheered for his display c£ clean and clever boxing.
MIDDLE-WEIGHTS. E. F. Tyson 10.13 beat D. Mitchell 11.3. Tyson fought in aggressive style from the outset, and scored well with a right swing to the head. Towards the end of tho round Mitchell wont down for three seconds to a heavy right swing to the jaw. Mitchell shaped better in tho second round, and brought into play a straight left. Some vigorous rallies took place in tho last round, but lx>th men fought rafher greenly, though very gamely. FEATHER-WEIGHTS. W. H. Leckio 8.11 beat J. Roberta (Invercargill) 8.12. Leckio out-generalled and out-lioxed the Invercargill man, who boxed gamely, but with little effect. W. Lucas 8.12 beat L. Adams (Invercargill) Lucas showed out best in the first round, but m the second Adams, boxing coolly, and watching his opportunities, got in several straight lefts flush to tho head. In the last round Lucas relied mainly on a right swing-, but the Invercargill man came inside his opponent’s blows repeatedly and used a very effective left. The decision did not meet with the entire approj-al of the audience. Adams appeared to wipe eff all the points against him in the last round.
LIGHT WEIGHTS. T. Harris 10.0 boat E. M'Neill (Invercargill) 10.0. Halfway through the first round Harris hooked a left to his opponent’s head, and ho went down for six seconds. M’Neill went down shortly after to a right swing to tho jaw, and was counted out. L. M'Donald 10.0 beat J. Griffin 9.8. Griffin, who hails from Cat Tins, fought in a plucky manner, and acme vigorous °rallies took place. M'Donald, however, always held tho advantage, and got hAmo with a hea\ l y body punch in the last round, Griffin being counted out.
N. Cox (Invercargil l ) 10.0 beat J. Mitchell 9.9.
In the first round Cox opened well with several solid right hand swings, but Mitchell stood up well, and just on tlia close of the round a most exciting rally rook place. Tho men. boxed at a fut pace ip the second it.und, both boring v, and exchanging blows, in a most determined fashion. Cox used a powerful right in the last round, and also piled up the points with a straight left to tho face. Mitchell stuck to his man in Hs usual gam© fashion, but did not have tho variety of punches of the Invercargill man.' This was the best exhibition of tho evening.
WELTER WEIGHTS,
F. Harvey (Invercargill) 10.6 beat T. Leary 10.9.
Harvey won all the way in a poor content, Tho competitions will be continued this evening, when two special rix-rcund bouts will bo included in tho programme. Tho draw for to-night in as follows: Bantam (final): W. Rowe v. L. Drew. Feather weight: W. H. Decide v. W. Lucas. Light Weight: Cox v. Harris; M'Donaid, a bye. Welter Weight: F. Harvey v. S. Mackey. Two special six-round bouts; A. Goodman v. G. Smith, J. Sycamore v. W. Watt.
