PRICES OF HOUSEHOLD COMMODITIES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — What is to become of the children in New Zealand this winter if bread is to be raised to Is Id per loaf and butter to be sold at 2s 3d per lb? Everybody knows that bread and butter are the everyday food of children; and now the price of oatmeal (another everyday food) is to be raised, and sugar is still bid per lb. Lately I went to see a mother who had given birth to twins. When I arrived I was told the patient was very low, but would like to see me. Poor soul, she wept, and told me she was worrying because two children had arrived instead of one. She had five other children, and was worn out trying to feed them. What wonder the poor mother wept! Do you know, this woman told me sh© had not tasted an egg during the war, simply because, if such a thing was to be had, it was kept for her h’isband or one of the children. She had a good husband who didn’t drink, and helped her in every way. She simply said: “ I really don’t know how I’m going to face things now.” As to meat, we hoar such a lot about the great drop in the price of stock, is it not time moat came down a little more in the butcher’s shop? Moreover, when is the price of sugar to ocme down? Things have now come to such a pass that a mother of children doesn't try to-make herself smart; she has just got to hunt to find the necessaries of life to keep her children living.—l am ,otc.
