ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT.
For the first concert of the thirty-fourth season to be given to-morrow night in His Majesty’s Theatre an exceptionally good programme has; been selected. The orchestral numbers include “Ruy Bias” Overture (Mendelssohn), Larghetto from Beethoven’s (Symphony (No. 2), Suite "Joseph and His Brethren,” and march “Bravour.” The programme reflects the splendid work achieved by the society. The supporting artists—Miss Mabeile Esquilant and Mr Jiwart Crewes—are an additional guarantee of a first-class musical evening. Miss Esquilant is recognised as one of the foremost contralto singers in New Zealand, and the society is fortunate in securing her assistance. Amongst other flattering remarks, the Wellington Evening Post, in reporting on a rendering of ‘‘The Messiah,” said: “ The great beauty of Miss Esquilant’s voice was made fully apparent last evening in all she did, and she succeeded in impressing her hearers, not only by what she did, but by what she evidently felt.’ Her items for the concert are “ Beloved, It Is Morn ” (Alvward) and “ O Mio Fernando” (Donizetti). Mr W. Ewart Crewes is also a singer of merit. His numbers include “ The Song of Open Country,” by Easthope Martin, the composer of ‘‘Crown of the Year,” a song Mr Crewes made a big success of at a previous concert of the society.
