Mr D, A. Aiken, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, left for Wellington yesterday morning. Mr W. B. Cunningham, local manager for the Union Steam Ship Company, who was to leave Lyttelton on Saturday to take up andsome leather suitcase by the company’s Greymouth branch, _ was presented • with a handsome leather suitcase b ythe company’s office and outdoor staff at Lyttelton (says the Christchurch Press). Mr R. O. lindsay, manager of the D-elco light department of the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. He purposes leaving shortly on an extended tour through Central Otago and the Lakes districts and Southland, returning to Dunedin in about a fortnight’s time. On account of ill-health, the _ Rev. R. _S. Watson has sent in his resignation as assistant minister of First Church. The resignation has not yet been considered by the Deacons’ Court, but it is understood that when Mr vVatson. was .asked if six months’ leave of absence would improve his health he said that would not do. Mr Watson is one of the brightest young ministers, and he is thought a great dead of by the New Zealand soldiers who were with him in France. Mr C. M. Malfroy, of Christchurch, has been appointedby the Public Service Commissioner as timber expert officer to % the State Forestry Service. Mr Malfroy was formerly on the West Coast, where he was a successful and prominent sawmiller. The new chair of economics in the University of Tasmania has been filled by the appointment of Mr D. B. Copland, M.A., a graduate of Canterbury College, and for some time assistant to Dr J. Hight. Professor Copland is an old South Canterbury boy. He has recently published a book on the wheat industry of New Zealand, and has a long and valuable article in the December number of the Economic Journal on currency inflation and price movements in Australia. ■

An announcement made in American papers that Dr Victor Parkin, of the medical staff of the Southern Californian Hospital at Patton, has been appointed physician-in-chief of the psychopathic department of the 'Los Angeles Country Hospital, is of local interest as Dr Parkin is an ex-pupil of the Albany Street School, and is the son of Mr J. Parkin, late of 223 Castle street. Dr Parkin was for eight years a member of the staff of the Hospital of Patton, and has won a reputation as one of the leading experts on mental disorders in the State of California.

The residents of Miller’s Plat district tendered a social and dance to Mrs Spratt, who haA been postmistress at Miller’s Flat for the last two and a-half years, and who has been promoted_ to the Post Office at Maori Hill. During- the evening Mr Roderick M'Donald, on behalf of the residents, mentioned the esteem in which Mrs Spratt was held by. the residents, of the district for her kind and obliging disposition, and handed her a well-filled envelope. Mrs Spratt suitably replied. The management and employees of the Waitaki Dair,y Company met last week to make a presentation to Miss Elsie Flfeming, who is leaving the firm to be married. Mr Bowman, in presenting Miss'Fleming with an afternoon tea set and several pieces of crystal, referred to the faithful service she had rendered. Messrs A. H. Mackrell, F. W. Pile, and R. W. Hall also spoke of the pleasant Relationship that had always existed between Miss Fleming and the staff, and they joined with Mr Bowman in wishing her success and happiness in her new sphere of life. Miss Fleming suitably responded.
