STEAMER WAIWERA

QUARANTINED AT AUCKLAND.

CASE OF MILD SMALLPOX.

AUCKLAND. January 31., The Shaw, Savill steamer Waiwera, which arrived today from Great Britain, via South African ports, Newcastle, and Sydney, has teen quarantined, apd a member of the crew isolated on Motuihi Island. His complaint has been diagnosed as alaetrim, which .Dr Hughes, medical inspector of health, states is supposed to be a mild form of smallpox. There are no passengers on board the vessel and no other suspected case aboard, but all on the vessel have been_ vaccinated. The mails from the United Kingdom and Australia on board the' vessel will not be handled until she has a_ clean_ bill of health. The period of quarantine will be at least one week.
