January 1L In a communication to the _ Secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, which body had asked the Government that loans to soldiers for the purchase of ready-built houses be not interfered .with in the case of married men who had no homes, the Hon. D H. Guthrie says that applications for advances to assist in the purchase of dwellings other than those in the course of erection are to be considered only where special circumstances can be shown, and where the lapse of time in erecting a building would inflict hardship. Land boards throughout the dominion, said the Minister, had been instructed to give careful con« sideration to all cases where special cirounv stances demanded.
